Three Rivers Kiwanis, Milo-Brownville March 25, 2009 Regular Morning Meeting
There were eleven members in attendance at the regular morning meeting at Sandee’s Restaurant on Wednesday morning. Dover-Foxcroft had three visitors and Key Club had Josh, Camille, and Stephanie. Orono/Oldtown had an inter-club present with four members. Our guests today are Todd Lyford, Shane Herbest, and Terry Knowles. Eben led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, Camille offered the Morning Prayer, and George provided the Thought for the Day. Ed, Walter and Mary Jane all have birthdays this coming week. We had a thank you card from Senator Collins for our contribution to the Penquis Recycling Center. Sheri has also volunteered to assist with the calendars again this year and Laurel is heading up sales and advertisements. Calendar information will be going out next week. This is a project we can all help out with and is always very successful. Shaws will also continue to contribute to the Kiwanis Foundation of New England through your Shaws Rewards card and you no longer have to save receipts. You do need to designate the organization you want to benefit and purchases need to be made on Tuesday, Wedsnesday, and Thursdays. Cathy is having surgery today and Don and Dottie are away with a family member who is ill. Ethelyn will preside over the meeting next week in George’s absence and Amber Gahagan will be the speaker. We had fifteen Happy/Sad dollars: Happy Sheri will help on the calendar and Shane and Todd are here and have completed applications to Kiwanis; Frank is happy to see snow; Dover Kiwanis served 1000 on Maine Maple Sunday; sad for difficulties in our community; happy for the good things our club is doing in the community. Jeff and Cathy Knox are working out the details for the Bike Rodeo on May 2, rain or shine at the school and more information will be coming. Jeff is looking for bike helmet source and Jim will be advertising the event. There will be a girl and boys bike as a door prize at the Rodeo. The library program starts on April 8th. Bobby needs interested members to visit the MS website on the brochure to register and get a pledge sheet for the April 25th walk. The Variety Show is May 8th and the fire marshal needs to have our props flame retardant. See Jeff if you need to treat props with retardant. Terry Knowles is our speaker today and is happy to visit our upbeat club. Terry is the EMA coordinator of Brownville and chairs the budget committee. Terry is working with the Kiwanis on a volunteer project for the Brownville River Walk May 16th. Jan Barton is heading up this Kiwanis One Day project and will be setting up the schedule and sign up. The River Walk is a successful volunteer project that has been made possible through the grace of landowners granting permission to go across their property. The River Walk is part of the Brownville Rec Department and has been open since 2000. The Key Club and Frank Cochrane have been very helpful carrying lumber in the past for bridge building and a new 14 foot bridge is planned for the May project. Terry would also like to install some directional signs and has started the process of finding individuals to identify plants along the walk. There will also be brush cutting, bench repair, and trash pickup in May. There is a sign in book at the walk that recorded approximately 250 visitors last year. People come from all over to use the walk. The Riverwalk is also listed on the Maine Highlands Great Woods website and the Piscataquis nature based trails. We would like to thank Terry for speaking to our club today and look forward to working with him on our Kiwanis One Day project. Meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Heidi Finson, Secretary
