Robert Lee of the American Legion Speaks
To
The Three Rivers Kiwanis
Milo, ME - 3/18/09 - Three Rivers Kiwanis,
Milo-Brownville
March 18, 2008
Regular Morning Meeting
There were sixteen members in attendance at the regular morning
meeting at Sandee’s Restaurant. Dover had three members present
and the Key Club had three members present and one member of
the Builders Club.
Eben led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, Edwin offered the
Morning Prayer, and Jim L. provided the Thought for the Day.
Don and Dottie have an anniversary today and Susan and Rachel
Almy have birthdays next week. Bob and Mary Lou Lee are
speaker/visitors today.
Jan read to the students at Lagrange elementary school for the
RIF program and returned with many thank you cards from the
students. Ethelyn has a birthday party planned for Edwin on
March 28th at the Sebec Corner Event Center from 2-5 p.m. and
invite members to attend.
The Key Club will not be able to have a bottle drive to cover
travel costs to the convention and will need additional support
from the Kiwanis. There was an inter-club to Orono/Old town on
March 17th. There is no Key Club this week as school is
released early. The Key Club invited the Kiwanis to join them
for the MS Walkathon on April 25th. Bobby Ellison has pledge
forms available for individuals interested in taking pledges
for this very important cause.
Kiwanis One Day will be on May 16th with the Pleasant River
Walk Clean up. Jan will have a sign-up sheet available next
week.
There was fourteen Happy/Sad dollars: First day of spring is
Friday; Moving Forward Day support; Orono inter-club; Frank is
back-ditto; Jan impressed with Lagrange school; glad to have
our speaker and guest present; Laural has a new baby niece; Jim
L. is happy to be a proud owner of AIG; and Eben shared some
acronyms of interest-GOLF Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden and
the meaning of Rule of Thumb. The Rule of Thumb law in England,
in the 1400’s, allowed a husband to beat his wife with a stick
no thicker than his thumb.
Our speaker today is war veteran Robert Lee from the American
Legion to speak on Americanism. Bob spoke on two particular
projects today that support students in developing leadership
skills and a greater understanding of American government.
One project is the American Legion Oratorical Scholarship
contest. Any student, grade 9-12th can enter. The student must
speak on some aspect of the Constitution in Lincoln Style, no
notes. They can weave a story with the aspect of the
Constitution within the story. Bob shared a video of contestant
Sarah Neeman giving her oratorical speech. Winners of the
National contest can win college scholarships from $14,000
to$18,000. There have been 2 State Champions in the last 5
years from Penquis. Applications are taken in October through
Patty Grillo or Clay Savage at PVHS or by contacting Bob Lee at
943-3267 or Dick Graves at 943-0938.
Another project is Dirigo Boys/Girls State for interested
students in the eleventh grade. The Legion and Woman’s
Auxiliary sponsor 2 or 3 students each year to Thomas College.
This is a good opportunity for students who want to learn about
leadership in government. Josh Clement shared that he attended
Boy’s State and it was great. Eben recalled, amazingly, that he
attended the 1st Boy’s State in 1948 at the University of
Maine. The application for this year is due by April 17th.
Applications for Boys/Girls State can be requested from Russ
Carey or Scott Gordon at PVHS or by contacting Bob Lee at
943-3267 or Dick Graves at 943-0938. Applications require
principal approval. We would like to thank Bob Lee for speaking
to our club today.
The meeting is adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Heidi Finson, Secretary
