Regular Meeting Minutes for 12/17/08
Three Rivers Kiwanis

(December 24th meeting canceled)

There were 12 members present at the regular morning meeting at Sandee’s Restaurant on Wednesday morning. We had an inter-club from Dover-Foxcroft and an inter-club from the Key Club with Josh, Camille, Katie, Hannah, and Stephanie. Our visitors today were Bill Sawtell and Pastor Paintor from the Brownville Jct. Methodist Church. Our speaker guest was Ron Desmarais.
Eben DeWitt led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, Heidi offered the morning prayer, and Jim Lord provided a thought for the day. There are no birthdays or anniversaries that we are aware of. We received an invitation to the Dover-Foxcroft club’s Winter Social on February 10th at 6:00 p.m. at Able’s Blood in Dover-Foxcroft. The cost is $15.00 per person. Three members attended the Dover-Foxcroft meeting on December 16th.
We received $16.00 Happy/Sad Dollars-Bonnie is happy to go to California; Jim got to use his “snow” wheel drive; Key Club appreciation week recognizing Mrs. Joyner; Josh and Katie toured the Kiwanis Trauma Institute in Boston; nine days ‘til Christmas; sad Bonnie is leaving but many happy dollars of appreciation for her work on the Secret Santa project; safe travel, the Yankees are going to the playoffs and A.J. Bennett; Bill has a new book “Schoodic Revisited” out before Christmas; happy to see new member, Lee Leman.
Bonnie reported on the Secret Santa project. The final number was 65 families with 168 children. There were many supporters of this project and the Key Club volunteered to send out thank you letters to donators. Community donations of gifts, toys, and money have helped make this project successful.
Cathy Graves reported on the Builders Club meeting and their Home for the Holidays project on Sunday December 21st from 5-8 at the Town Hall. Kiwanis members are invited to attend or make cookies.
Sandee’s will be closed on December 24th so we will NOT meet on the 24th. Josh will reschedule his speakers.
Camille introduced the speaker Ron Demarais, the owner of Eastern Maine Shooting Supplies, Mars Machine, Inc., and an auto body shop located on Main Street in Milo. This local business has their own line of gun cleaning accessories as well as label for other companies. Former employees of Ox Yoke joined together to start Eastern Maine Shooting Supplies and has seen steady growth since starting the business. A new contract has just been entered into with Cabella’s. The machine shop makes assembly parts for a variety of guns with their CNC’s. Currently they are working on a quick release rod for a muzzle loader in product development.
Though small business is a challenge in Maine, the business maintains a low overhead as it continues to grow and expand. There are two additions planned this year to the building purchased in 2006. The business currently employs four full time and two part time employees. Advertisements for this local business can be seen in magazines and television on the North American Safari.
We would like to thank Ron Desmarais for speaking today and being a great supporter of kids in the community.
Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Heidi Finson, Secretary
