Regular Meeting Minutes
February 25, 2009
There were twelve people in attendance at the regular morning meeting at Sandee’s Restaurant. We had an inter-club from Dover with five members in attendance. Key Club had Josh, Stephanie, and Camille present. We also had a special visitor, Bill Sawtell and our speaker Reverand Painter.
Eben DeWitt led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, Camille offered the Morning Prayer, and George provided a Thought for the Day. Carl and Sophie Wilson have an anniversary today.
George received a request from the Life Skills program for funds to help covering the cost of going to the YMCA, it will be added to the March board agenda. He also received a request from the PCEDC for the Kiwanis to endorse a regional recycling plan for the Milo/Brownville area that meets state requirements. Five board members met following the morning meeting and agreed that if the town managers were in agreement with the plan then George would endorse on behalf of Kiwanis. Don Crossman would also like to speak at Kiwanis on Health Care Reform and will be contacted with a date.
We had thirteen Happy/Sad dollars-Herbie, Doc, and Ed feel recycled; hope we have seen the last of the snow; happy not snowed in; the dog likes the snow; home renovations going well; Laurel is sad that Jeeter passed away.
We had six members participate with the ekiwanis for an inter-club. Inter-club planned for Orono/Oldtown on Tuesday, March 3rd. Contact Ethelyn if you plan to go. Josh Clement will be the speaker on March 4th and Bob Lee will speak on March 18th.
The Young Children Priority One Committee met on February 18th. We are looking for volunteers for the Library program later in the spring on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:45. We will keep the club informed of the dates and plans for the program.
Our speaker today is Reverand Painter from the Brownville Jct. Methodist Church. Rev. Painter was born in South Africa to a Catholic family. Rev. Painter’s Bishop suggested that Maine was a good place to come and write a book reflecting on his journey from South Africa to America.
Rev. Painter shared a tremendous story of life in South Africa during the apartheid and the forced separation of his parents and never seeing his father again. He was part of the opposition to apartheid and was arrested. He expressed the seriousness of this situation and many were killed for their opposition but realized that he had to take a stand and do what you have to do for what you believe in.
Rev. Painter shared his prayers as a young boy and his belief in the miracles of Jesus. He has always believed in a dialogue between cultures and to break bread and talk to each other for reconciliation.
It was a tremendous privilege to have Rev. Painter as our speaker today and this is only a small picture of his journey. I personally will look forward to reading his book when it is completed. Though he states that conditions in South Africa are better now and he visits there often, he emphasized that “America is Incredible”. We would like to thank Rev. Painter for speaking today.
Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully Submitted, Heidi Finson, Secretary
